Tourism: A Double Sided Coin

Overdependence On Tourism Income:
Effects and Solutions to Unsustainable Tourism

“Overdependence On Tourism Income: Effects and Solutions to Unsustainable Tourism” is a presentation that reveals just how risky it can be to over-rely on tourism for one's income. Focusing on when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the project explores what happened when local shops in Indonesia and Thailand were left without customers. By using real-life case studies, the project explains the dangers of leaning too heavily on tourism. It also points to solutions such as batik workshops that engage both community members and travellers to sustain local culture. The project invites us to reimagine a future where Southeast Asian communities rise beyond dependency on tourism, weaving sustainability and heritage into a long-term socio-economic resilience plan.
