The Contrasting Dream vs Reality of Immigrants

The Human Cost of Labor: A Reassessment of Malaysia’s Migrant Worker Policies

“The Human Cost of Labor: A Reassessment of Malaysia’s Migrant Worker Policies” is a newspaper that exposes how immigrants carry hopes and dreams of escaping poverty, in hopes of a finer life in another country. However, their efforts are severely underappreciated, despite doing heavy and even inhumane work. The project reassesses the underlying human rights violations immigrant workers face in Malaysia, where migrant reliance meets exploitation, and other SEA countries with a similar lack of protective immigrant laws. Undocumented families struggle, with their children denied their rightful education. This project invites us to pause, to feel, and to reimagine how we treat the workers who travel far in search of a better life — for them, and for us.
