Reconciling Temporal Frictions
The Bitterness of Past, The Sweetness of Future, The Taste of Southeast Asia
“The Bitterness of Past, the Sweetness of Future, the Taste of Southeast Asia” explores the deep historical roots of Southeast Asian cuisine and the enduring influence of colonialism on the region’s food culture. Through its combination of dish spotlights and informative articles, the magazine presents history alongside the flavours and traditions that define it, inviting readers to experience Southeast Asian culture as something tangible and lived. At the same time, it engages with the modern issue of “cultural claiming,” challenging readers to think critically about ownership and authenticity in the global food industry. In doing so, the project not only uncovers complex colonial legacies but also asks: how can Southeast Asia honour its past while protecting the future integrity of its cuisine?
